$0 To $10,000 Passive Income In A Year: Week 1 Update
$0 To $10,000 Passive Income In A Year: Week 1 Update |
The start is often the hardest part. This challenge is no different.
I’m writing this week’s update on an iPad and with lack of screenshots. I know, I know… boriiiiinnnngggg. I’m sorry about that. Next week’s update will be better. Promise 🤞🏽.
In this update we cover:
- Done This Week
- Expenses and income
- Next week’s plan
My very first struggle is keyword research. It’s not a foreign topic to me but I’ve never built a niche site with keywords in mind.
When I write on Medium, I treat it as a public journal so I don’t bother with keyword research. Plus, Medium has its own audience and I didn’t need to worry about Google ranking to get some reads on my work.
With this project, I need to focus on Google ranking if I ever want to smell that $10,000.
So this week, here is what I’ve done:
Chose My Niche
Coming into this challenge, I already had some niches in mind. So this week, I used keyword research to narrow it down. More on that later.
Choosing a niche isn’t all about keyword research though. The niche has to be a topic I’m at least 60% interested in and can write about. I don’t have the budget to hire an expert writer; I have to write all the content myself. Or at least for the first 6 months of this challenge.
With all that in mind, I decided my niche to be philosophy for meaningful life. My target audience is stressed, overworked people looking for a happier, more fulfilling life.
Keyword Research
I got a 7-day free trial for Long Tail Pro and it’s been great. I have 2 sites I’ll be building — Remote Money in the make money online niche and Website #1 in philosophy. I have to admit, the philosophy niche is harder to rank compared to make money online niche.
With Long Tail Pro, you can sort by competitiveness, volume, rank volume and more. I used the keyword competitiveness to see which keywords are easiest to rank for. I took a couple of keywords with least competition and used Topic Mojo to look into the trend and what people are searching for in that topic.
I also used keywords with highest search volume to check what other websites are posting to rank those keywords. With this search method, I’m looking for websites with low domain authority that’s ranking on the first page of Google for a competitive keyword with high volume. These sites are kept in my favorites for a deeper analysis of content they have, article layout, other keywords they’re ranking for. Basically if these low domain sites can be in the top page, they’re doing something right. And I am going to find it.
Built Remote Money on WordPress
I also managed to build a simple, minimalist site for remotemoney.co. It is super simple, plain and… free! I didn’t want to spend too long on it because I’ll spend more on designing it in January/February. My plan is to get the content ready first before officially launching the site.
You can visit it but I have to warn you. There’s not much there right now.
Wrote 3, Published 2
I wrote (and published) two articles on Medium. One announcing this challenge and one on productivity. I also wrote a draft for the philosophy niche. I haven’t published it yet as I have yet to build the site. I plan on writing 4 to 5 articles first before publishing them.
Expenses
My only expense this week is for Topic Mojo. I bought a lifetime license from appsumo for $59. I think it’s a good deal. Topic Mojo gives me article ideas.
Income
As of today, I have earned $2.08 on Medium. Some months. $2 is all I earn for the whole month so having $2 in a week is great progress.
Next Week’s Plan
Unfortunately, my day job is going to demand a lot from me next week as it’s the biggest sale week for us. I don’t know how much I’ll be able to work on this project but I’m going to give it my all. No pain, no gain.
I’m going to make sure I write 3 new articles. Two for philosophy site and one for Remote Money. If I have the time, I’ll repurpose some content for my Medium site.
