How much passive income have I made with Brave Browser and how you can do the same?

A year ago, I went on a mission to find the best ad-blocking software for my phone and PC, to improve my mobile browsing experience, as viewing content online turned into a horrible experience filled with ads.

That's when I discovered Brave Browser.

The main selling point of Brave is to offer a safe browsing experience while not gathering personal data about its users like Google does and splitting the revenue from “Brave Private Ads” with you. As the Brave Rewards page says:

“Earn tokens by viewing Brave Private Ads. Ads presented are based on your interests, as inferred from your browsing behavior. No personal data or browsing history ever leaves your browser”.

Ever since I found out, that I can have the majority of ads blocked and control how many “Brave Private Ads” are shown to me per day to earn a small passive income, I was hooked. So I downloaded the app to my phone and PC to test it out. You get rewarded for viewing ads in Basic Attention Token (BAT).

But before I talk about my experience and how much I made over a period of one year, let's look at the native token of Brave Browser first.

Basic Attention Token
As the name suggests, Basic Attention Tokens are rewards for your attention. As you are shown ads (that are barely noticeable and are shown on your home page or via pop-up notifications) you'll get rewarded with a small amount of BAT.

Your BAT balance is slowly being added to your “browser wallet” every month based on the number of seen ads. You can see the amount by clicking the triangle icon on the right side of the search bar.

Token itself can be withdrawn and sold like a regular cryptocurrency or it can be donated to support content creators that are eligible to receive brave rewards through tips or monthly subscriptions.

BAT withdrawal process
To withdraw BAT, you need to connect your Brave Browser to one of the supported wallets (either. Uphold, Gemini or bitFlyer) based on your location.

To withdraw Basic Attention Tokens you need to have a KYC exchange connected like Uphold or Gemini.
After connecting you can transfer tokens from the browser wallet and sell/convert them to your preferred currency.

Unfortunately, there is an issue with connecting Brave wallet to Uphold/Gemini right now. So you might not be able to withdraw your tokens if you are not in one of the supported regions.

My Experience
Now that you know what Brave Browser does and how it works, let's talk about my experience of using it as a browser of choice for a year.

Setting things up
Setup is simple and is done in a few easy steps:

Download the app.
Migrate your data from your previous browser of choice in a few clicks.
Check if your add-ons were migrated as well.
Set up how many Brave private ads you wish to see (0–10)
You’re all set and ready to browse the internet ad-free (unless you opted for Brave private ads)
Using it on a daily basis
After setting things up, you can browse whatever you like as usual. Brave will serve you occasional ads on your home page or you’ll get a notification pop-up.

As for my experience:

I don’t have pop-ups enabled on my PC and after some time, you won’t even notice the ad on your home page while opening a new window in Brave browser.
On my phone I have pop-up notifications turned on, but I rarely click on them.
So in terms of avoiding unwanted ads, Brave served its purpose.

Brave Rewards
After a year of using it, I can safely say that this is not a viable source of income and you should not treat it as such. However, it is a nice form of a small passive income that can get you a “free cup of coffee” at the end of the year.

As your reward is in BAT a cryptocurrency, its price is naturally volatile. At the time of writing this article, the price of the Basic Attention token is 0,28USD which is 82% lower than its all-time high at 1,92USD.

My PC Reward after 1 year:
After 1 year, I made around 7,75BAT so far, and another 2,964BAT is on its way. So my PC total balance is 10,714BAT or 2,96USD at the current exchange rate.

At its peak, it would be worth around 20,57USD.

My Phone Reward after 1 year:
The rewards on my phone are a bit better. The current balance is 17BAT which translates to 4,76USD, while 1,854BAT or 0,52USD is on its way so far. If exchanged today the total balance on my phone, which is 18,854BAT would be worth around 5,28USD.

At the peak price of the Basic Attention Token, my phone balance would be worth 36,2USD.

Rewards Summary
While using Brave, I received 29,568BAT worth around 8,24USD at the current prices. At its peak, this small bag would be worth 56,77USD which is nice for basically “zero effort”.

Monthly rewards
So on average, I made around 2,464BAT which equals 0,6776USD per month or 4,73USD at the all-time high price of BAT.

Daily rewards
Per day I made 0,08213BAT which equals roughly 2 cents at today's prices or 15 cents at the all-time high price for the Basic attention token.

Conclusion
After one year I can say that my browsing experience improved dramatically, and occasional private ads were also earning me a small amount of BAT each month, which was a nice little benefit.

In total, I received around 29BAT worth anywhere from 8–56USD based on the market value of the token.

There are also some other benefits, especially for mobile users. Mainly:

No ads on YouTube
Videos/ music playing while having a locked screen (great for listening to your favorite music mix on YouTube)
An added level of “privacy”
Saves data and time
Blocks trackers
and other
Here are some other stats from my year-long experience:

Total rewards received: 29,568BAT
Total non-rewarding ads seen: 0
Total trackers and Ads blocked: 855 031
Est. Data Saved: 13GB
Time Saved: 11,1h

Would I recommend Brave to you?
If you are annoyed with the constant spam of ads, especially on your mobile device, then yes (100%). However, if you think you can make a living from Brave Rewards, you should look elsewhere. Rewards are just a small benefit for a free coffee or a way to support your favorite creators for free. Ultimately it's up to you and your preferences.

As always, you need to do your own research on it. Also If you want to use Uphold to withdraw your BAT, you can use my referral link, to be rewarded 20 USD after depositing over 250USD into your Uphold wallet.

Thank you for reading all the way through and I hope you learned something new from this article. If you use Brave already and have some tips on how to increase the brave rewards, feel free to let me know in the comments. Any info is greatly appreciated.
